“As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.”
Proverbs 27:17 NLT
By: Apostle Diann J. Wilson
When we think of iron, we imagine something very hard and durable. Not many things can make a piece of iron sharp, but we learn that another piece of iron can be used to sharpen iron. When we think of friends, we do not think of sharpening. We think of love, enjoyment, entertainment and good times. We think of trust, loyalty and kindness. These are qualities that friends display towards each other. But, sharpening? Hmmm.
A good friend can help you to become a better person by telling you the truth about you. That is what is meant by sharpening. A real friend would not be afraid to tell us when we are going the wrong way or doing the wrong things. We may not like it at the time. It may even put the relationship through a period of instability, but at the end, it will be to the benefit of the one who received the correction.
Do not surround yourself with friends who agree with you all the time or who are so insecure in themselves, that they are afraid to confront issues or deal with differences of opinion. Develop friendships that can help you to become a better person. Friends that can sharpen friends are blessings and must be cherished because they have the interest of their friends at heart.
Be such a friend yourself.
