Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 NLT
Spirit, soul and body. Three distinct parts of a person, yet very much connected. When one part is weak or sick, the other two parts are affected too. For example, if we don’t take care of our bodies by eating well and exercising, we won’t feel the best about ourselves, and when our souls are wounded by things like rejection and disappointment, our bodies feel the effect. Designed by a Master Engineer, every part of us is interdependent.
That’s why building unity on the INSIDE is so important.
We have referred to unity primarily as a force existing between individuals, but let’s look for a moment at unity within individuals.
Internal unity is the state of a person being one, with all parts of that person being unified. There is no contradiction, no discord, no disagreement within the person. The body, soul and spirit are in alignment and working together to produce the best self and accomplish his or her divine purpose. When one is internally unified, he or she experiences a state of internal peace.
(And this my friend, is what the world is searching for… If you have ever experienced an internal war, where your emotions are fighting your mind, or your body is resisting the instructions of your spirit, then you will know how valuable inner unity is.)
Internal unity is necessary for external unity. When we are at peace on the inside, then that’s what we will project outwardly. The greater the internal unity, the more we can contribute to the building of unity in a group or team. Because we are whole, we will be a stable, consistent, fully present and fully engaged member of the team who is able to give our best for the benefit of the group.
Let’s take a moment to check in with our “self” today and honestly see how we are doing. If we were to take our thermometer to measure our internal unity, what would our readings be? How unified are we on the inside? Is there unity within you? What adjustments can be made to help you to be more at peace?
The Holy Spirit is ready and willing to help us to bring alignment and agreement within so that we can become more unified. The God of peace is with you to help you walk in unity today!
