“Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” Colossians 3:2
As children of God, we are in the world but not of the world. Our citizenship is of heaven, not of earth. We understand that the things of this world will surely someday come to an end and so, we must not fall in love with them.
It is true, God gave man dominion of the earth and He sent His Son to redeem that which was lost to the enemy, but until there is a new heaven and a new earth, as described in the Book of Revelation, life on this earth will always be tainted with sin. Understanding this, will cause us not to store up treasures on earth where they can be consumed by rust, eaten by moths or stolen by thieves. No, we refuse to be caught up in the temporary things of life.
We refuse to allow things to control us.
Determine in your heart not to let material possessions be your god and the pursuit of them, your purpose in life. Instead, set your heart and your affections on things eternal that will pass the test of time. These things that cannot always be seen but they can be experienced and enjoyed. Intangible entities such as love, joy, gentleness, meekness, faith, and kindness must be the order of our day.
As our lives are hid in Christ, our desires and affections must also be on things that Christ is interested in. Remember, we have died to this world and our new life is in Him.
What are the things that consume you? Are your affections in the right place? Now is a good time to take an inventory of your desires and ensure that you are storing up your treasures in the correct location.
My Father, I thank You for Your love and Your provision for me. I know that You have given me things to enjoy as part of Your blessings on my life. Help me, Lord, not to become consumed by them. Help me to be able to hold them lightly so that if I lose them I will not be destroyed. Father, please help me to be a good steward and give them all back to You. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.
