“Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.” Colossians 3:2
As children of God, we are in the world but not of the world. Our true citizenship is of heaven, not of earth. We understand that the things of this world will surely someday come to an end and so, we must not fall in love with them. No, we must refuse to be caught up in the temporary things of life. We refuse to allow things to control us.
Determine in your heart not to let material possessions be your god and the pursuit of them, your purpose in life. Instead, set your heart and your affections on things eternal that will pass the test of time. These things cannot always be seen, but they can be experienced and enjoyed – intangible entities such as love, joy, gentleness, meekness, faith, and kindness.
What are the things that consume you? Are your affections in the right place? Now is a good time to take an inventory of your desires and ensure that you are storing up your treasures in the correct location.
My Father, I thank You for Your love and Your provision for me. I know that You have given me things to enjoy as part of Your blessings on my life. Help me, Lord, not to become consumed by them. Help me to be able to hold them lightly so that if I lose them I will not be destroyed. Father, please help me to be a good steward and give them all back to You. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.
