“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.” 1 John 4:7
In Matthews’ Gospel, Jesus was asked about the greatest commandment. Jesus answered, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the fist and great commandment. And the second is like unto it. Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” Many of us declare our love for God while we dislike our brother and sister. The word of God is clear: you cannot love Him Whom you cannot see and hate those who you can see.
My friend, let us love one another. Yes, people will hurt us and cause us to want to hurt them back, but if we measure everything to Calvary and what Jesus endured for our sake, we would not retaliate. We can pattern after Jesus and forgive them because they don’t know what they are doing or have done.
It costs to love. It cost the Father everything He had, His only Son, to love us. It will cost us something too. Today, let us purpose in our hearts to walk in the love of God. The pure, sincere love that we receive from the Father let us give to others. It does not matter whether they deserve it or not. We do not deserve it and God still loves us. Why can’t we do the same?
Father of love, thank You for the gift of Your son Jesus Christ. You demonstrated Your love for me by sending Your Son, help me to show my love for You by loving Your people. Baptize me afresh and anew with Your love today Lord. Let Your love flow freely in me and through me to others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
